Plastic Use in Grocery Stores
Grocery stores are a place we go often to get our Grocery products. Stores in the United States use a lot of plastic. For instance, Helmer states that the "United States generates 42 million metric tons of plastic waste each year." An example of how Plastic is used a lot in stores is when you walk around to purchase items they have a section to where you can grab plastic bags to put your food inside. Therefore, stores use a lot of plastic and it then leads to problems because it will then go into the "oceans or landfills where it takes up to 500 years to break down" (Helmer).
According to Redman, this graph shows "U.S grocers ranked on plastic reduction." As you can see there are many popular grocery stores like Save Mart, Walmart, Costco, and more. Many places have very low percentages. "Kroger is the only top-five retailer by revenue that has committed to ban single-use plastic shopping bags" (Redman). Although this is only one step for one store, multiple grocery stores still need to improve to use less plastic.
